Here is a brief history of the Mission and our families contributions to the area.
Our family built a church in the 1500's. The church runs an orphanage and the sisters and Mother Superior of the church take care of the children. These children have either lost both parents or they have a single parent who cannot afford to give them three meals a day. The sisters who take care of the children try to get sponsors to feed the children good meals.
The orphanage was closed due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic which hit the area hard. The children with remaining families were forced to be with their parents full time and for an extended period, those without families stayed with the sisters of the church. During this time, the 10th generation of the de Mel family, Santiago's great grand children, began to supply the funds needed to feed the children whose families could not afford food, and the Santiago Mission was born. We sponsor meals every Sunday with good food including meat and dessert for the whole week which helps the children to grow up healthy. We are now supplying food and milk to children and babies in the village who need all the help they can get. Our POA Mr. Jayachandran has been organizing and implementing this project successfully from the field.
